Malaria in United States Is at a 40-Year High

Malaria cases in the United States have reached a 40-year high, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Thursday, but virtually all were in travelers who were infected overseas. Of the 1,925 cases detected in 2011, almost 70 percent were in people who had visited Africa, particularly West Africa. Most others were from India. Five ended in death. Cases peaked in January and August after the Christmas and summer travel seasons. Only five cases occurred in the United States, said Dr. Paul M. Arguin, the agency’s chief of domestic malaria. One was a lab accident, another was from a blood transfusion, two were in babies born to mothers who had traveled and one occurred in winter in a patient whose travel history might not have been fully disclosed.
