Southeast Coastal Climate Network (SECCN) - The Florida Climate Alliance (FCA)

The Southeast Coastal Climate Network (SECCN) and its sub-group, the Florida Climate Alliance (FCA), are coalitions of individuals and organizations working on the issue of climate change in the coastal Southeast.  The Network and Alliance facilitate communication and collaboration between members thus providing central places of discussion about how coastal communities can effectively respond to climate change.  Membership is diverse and includes representatives from small businesses, government, academia, nonprofit organizations, and concerned citizens with a geographic spread spanning the Atlantic coast from Maryland southward to Florida as well as the Gulf coast.  FCA’s geographic membership is focused primarily on Florida although some members work and live elsewhere in the country.  While the focus of each member’s work may be different, the unifying theme that brings the groups together is the recognition that global warming will bring major change to society and thus we must maximize our efforts to protect ourselves where possible.  The Network and Alliance allow for those with coastal climate concerns to coalesce and bring out synergies between their efforts. Emphasis is placed on mitigating increasingly aggressive climate change by reducing greenhouse gas pollution and adapting to the changes that are inevitably being caused by a changing climate.

SECCN’s  and FCA’s websites (http://seccn.groupsite.com and http://floridaclimatealliance.groupsite.com) allow for members to utilize an email list, discussion boards, a shared calendar, and a collaborative blog.  These tools encourage communication and collaboration between various stakeholders, commonly resulting in the rapid sharing of relevant news, information, and events.

Another of SECCN’s key features is its webinar series.  SECCN hosts webinars on subjects pertinent to coastal climate concerns such as developments in climate science, sea level rise, and climate adaptation.  The 2012 webinar series will begin early in the year and its schedule will be posted on the Network’s website (http://seccn.groupsite.com).

Other plans for 2012 include organizing a multi-state coordinated action for Hands Across the Sand (http://handsacrossthesand.com) in June and the 350.org day of climate action in early fall.

To stay up-to-date on SECCN’s and FCA’s happenings, please visit http://seccn.groupsite.com and http://floridaclimatealliance.groupsite.com and sign up for membership.  It is free and open to all.
