Biomass Electricity More Polluting Than Coal

The report found that although wood-burning power plants are often promoted as being good for the climate and carbon neutral, the low efficiency of plants means that they emit almost 50 percent more CO2 than coal per unit of energy produced.

Biomass electricity generation, a heavily subsidized form of “green” energy that relies primarily on the burning of wood, is more polluting and worse for the climate than coal, according to a new analysis of 88 pollution permits for biomass power plants in 25 states.

Gray whale dies bringing us a message — with stomach full of plastic trash

July 29, 2013, a sperm whale was stranded on Tershelling, a northern island in the Netherlands. A rescue attempt was attempted, but unfortunately the whale died. A young adult at 13.5 meters was taken for a necropsy at the port of Harlington. The sperm whale had plastic in its stomach, an increasing common phenomenon say researchers at the Biodiversity Centre Naturalis. In  March of this year, a 10 meter long sperm whale washed up on Spain’s South Coast. This whale had swallowed 59 different plastic items totaling over 37 pounds. Most of this plastic consisted of transparent sheeting used to build greenhouses in Almeria and Grenada for the purpose of tomatoes for the European market. The rest was plastic bags, nine meters of rope, two stretches of hosepipe, two small flower pots, and a plastic spray canister. Cause of death was intestinal blockage.

Residents in Lyons, Colorado are "completely isolated" by floodwaters that have disrupted their sewer and fresh water.

Boulder County Sheriff Joseph Pelle told 7News that residents were being told to reach for higher ground.

"They're completely isolated at this point. There is no access in or out," Pelle said during a Thursday media briefing. "They've lost their sewer plant, they've lost their fresh water, lost their market."

'A group of African American citizens filed suit today against their city government in Rochelle, Ga. for discharging the city’s raw sewage onto their properties.

White residents of Rochelle live predominately on the south side of the city’s railroad track. African Americans live largely on the north.  The residents say the city has repaired and updated its sewage pipes on the south side of the tracks but has let repairs lag on the African American side.  As a result, untreated sewage backs up and overflows into the streets and the yards of residents on the north side of the tracks. 

The residents are being represented by Earthjustice, a nonprofit environmental law organization whose Florida office is handling the litigation. The Clean Water Act suit, filed in the United States District Court, Middle District of Georgia, seeks to stop the unpermitted discharges of raw sewage from manholes, broken pipes and a ditch.' ...

Capitol To Send 5,000 Tons of Trash For Burnin'

When Republicans took over the House in 2010, a makeover of sorts took place. Over objections from Democrats, they traded in Rep. Nancy Pelosi's, D-Calif., biodegradable Greenware for Styrofoam and ditched Pelosi's "Green the Capitol" initiative in favor of one that burned trash.

And now House Republicans are touting the results of their nearly 1-year-old "Waste-to-Energy" program, in which non-recyclable Capitol trash gets burned in an Alexandria, Va. facility and converted into energy. About 3,700 tons of waste have already been diverted from landfills, and an estimated 5,000 would be sent to incinerators by November, according to a statement from the Architect of the Capitol Stephen Ayers.

House Administration Committee Chair Dan Lungren, R-Calif., said in a statement that the program has "made huge strides to improve our environmental sustainability" and has helped generate enough electricity to power about 250 homes a year.

But Democrats concerned about the Styrofoam in the House cafeteria wouldn't paint such an environmentally-friendly picture of such Republican efforts.

Waste-to-energy plants burn municipal solid waste (MSW) to generate electricity or heat. At the plant, MSW is unloaded from collection trucks and shredded or processed to ease handling. The waste is fed into a combustion chamber to be burned. The heat released from burning the MSW is used to produce steam, which turns a turbine to generate electricity.

In 2011, there were 75 waste-to-energy plants operating in 20 states, with a total electric generating capacity of 2,238 megawatts. During the same year, waste-to-energy plants generated approximately 14 million megawatthours of electricity from MSW, or about 0.3% of total U.S. generation, which was roughly the same as geothermal electricity generation in the United States.
