Loo turns poo into power

www.homelandsecuritynewswire.com - June 27, 2012

Scientists from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) have invented a new toilet system that will turn human waste into electricity and fertilizers and also reduce the amount of water needed for flushing by up to 90 percent compared to current toilet systems in Singapore.

Dubbed the No-Mix Vacuum Toilet, it has two chambers that separate the liquid and solid wastes.  Using vacuum suction technology, such as those used in aircraft lavatories, flushing liquids would now take only 0.2 liters of water while flushing solids require just one liter.

Larger Role for Renewable Energy in U.S. Future Than Previously Thought

Existing renewable energy source can supply most of U.S. needs // Source: axortagos.gr

Homeland Security News Wire - June 22, 2012

Renewable electricity generation from technologies that are commercially available today, in combination with a more flexible electric system, is more than adequate to supply 80 percent of total U.S. electricity generation in 2050 while meeting electricity demand on an hourly basis in every region of the country; new study finds that renewable generation could play a more significant role in the U.S. electricity system than previously thought

Biochar

www.avellobioenergy.com - June 16, 1012

submitted by Al Cisneros

Biochar is the solid, black co-product from the Avello™FRAC process. The properties of biochar may vary widely depending on biomass type, processing technology and operating conditions; but all exhibit a high carbon content that typically ranges between 50 and 85%+. The highly aromatic structure of biochar make it chemically and biologically more stable than the biomass from which it was made.

Biochar will be marketed as a soil amendment, renewable heat and power fuel and potential carbon sequestration agent.

U.S. Loan for Huge Brazilian Landfill Gas Project Pays Dividends

submitted by Albert Gomez

waste-management-world.com - May 31,2012

A $48.6 million loan by the Export-Import Bank of the United States (Ex-Im Bank) supporting exports of equipment and services for the development of the Novo Gramacho biogas project in Brazil has generated 165 new jobs.

The transaction is Ex-Im Bank's first financing for biogas reclamation and development.

Among the beneficiaries is Newport Beach, California based renewable energy specialist, FirmGreen, which estimated that the project directly generated 165 new jobs at its facilities and at other companies in seven states.

Maine regulators on Tuesday put three utilities on the path to distribute electricity harnessed from tides at the nation's eastern tip, a key milestone in a bid to turn the natural rise and fall of ocean levels into power.

The Maine Public Utilities Commission set terms for a contract that would be in place for 20 years. The regulators also directed the three utilities to negotiate with Ocean Renewable Power Co. to put electricity onto the grid this summer, the first long-term power purchase agreements for tidal energy in the United States.

Homeland Security News Wire - April 24, 2012

From 1970 to 2000 the number of magnitude 3.0 or greater temblors in the U.S. mid-continent averaged twenty-one annually; by 2011 the number of such quakes had increased to 134; a new study by the U.S. Geological Survey links the increase of seismic activity to the increase in the use of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking

USGS Releases Global Estimate for Undiscovered, Technically Recoverable Conventional Oil and Gas Resources

submitted by Robert G. Ross

maritime-executive.com - USGS - U.S. Dept. of the Interior - April 23, 2012

WASHINGTON—Excluding the United States, the world holds an estimated 565 billion barrels (bbo) of undiscovered, technically recoverable conventional oil; 5,606 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of undiscovered, technically recoverable conventional natural gas; and 167 billion barrels of undiscovered, technically recoverable natural gas liquids (NGL), according to a new assessment by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) released today.

The report includes mean estimates of undiscovered but technically recoverable conventional oil and gas resources in 171 geologic provinces of the world.

New EPA Rules Target Pollution at Fracking Sites

submitted by Janine Rees

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's new rules are expected to affect about 11,000 new wells annually that undergo fracking and an additional 1,200 that are re-fracked to boost production. Above, a fracking operation near Dimock, Pa. (Carolyn Cole, Los Angeles Times / December 27, 2011)

WASHINGTON — TheU.S. Environmental Protection Agencyissued regulations that for the first time will curtail air pollution from natural gas wells that use a controversial production technique known as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.

The regulations will limit emissions of volatile organic compounds, which react with sunlight to create smog. The rules also will curb carcinogens and methane, the main component of natural gas and a potent contributor to climate change.

U.S. OKs Sabine Pass Natural Gas Export Plant

The Sabine Pass LNG terminal is spread over an 853 acre site in Cameron Parish, Louisiana, US.

by Steve Hargreaves - CNN - April 17, 2012

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The government approved the first ever natural gas export facility in the lower 48 states on Monday, clearing the way for a project that could be a significant job creator.

But critics argue that, just like the Keystone pipeline expansion, building this project will have environmental impacts far beyond the plant itself. They also say it could raise the price of natural gas in the U.S.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission voted in favor of Texas-based Cheniere Energy's plan to build a giant natural gas liquefaction and export terminal at Sabine Pass, which straddles the Texas-Louisiana border just north of the Gulf of Mexico.

North Sea Oil Shock Keeps Fire Under Brent Price

Just when it looked as if Iran's oil shock was starting to be absorbed by the market, a problem in Europe is keeping alight the fire under crude prices.

On March 25, a gas leak forced Total SA, the French oil company, to halt production of 60,000 barrels of oil per day at the Elgin field, about 200 kilometers from the coast of Scotland. The high-profile incident has led to soul-searching that could rein in output in the Continent's largest oil patch.
