'Any informed student of wind energy ... understands that'

Truth has a habit of emerging from unexpected places. An article in the Daily Kos about the desire to end dependence on fossil fuels for energy needs reveals a “nasty little secret” about wind energy: It relies on fossil fuels.

Instead of denying that wind needs to be balanced we should proactively suggest doing so with fossil fuels is not the only option. Energy storage is perfect for balancing intermittency. Store wind when it blows and dispatch when it is needed. Of course then
the proportion wind and storage provide of total energy in any given area will depend on if the capacity meets the load but at least intermittency won’t require fossil fuels.  Right?

Krae,

At a minimum, it will dramatically reduce fossil fuel use as soon at the systems are put in, which can be done rapidly.  I can show you a behind the meter solar and battery system that is working fabulously in East Hampton now.  It has an inverter installed, so when the central grid goes out for ten days or ten months like on the Atlantic coast of Dominica following Cat 5 hurricane Maria, they will have electricity.

I am not as interested in energy storage schemes owned or controlled by monopoly utilities that only extract capital from communities, in that they have demonstrated sociopathic tendencies, like the Shoreham nuclear power plant-like debacles too many times to be trusted. The energy should be produced, owned, controlled, stored, and consumed by prosumers behind or beyond any utility meter.  Community-based energy cubes make sense, when supplied by renewable energy, if their economy model supports local energy generation within a circular economy that grows local green businesses and jobs.
