Norfolk officials are reporting a storm surge of just over 8 feet at the downtown flood gate.

City spokesman Bob Batcher said that’s about the surge size that occurred during Hurricane Isabel eight years ago.

Batcher said the coming hours will be the most dangerous. He’s urging people to stay inside.

“We’re heading into what can be one of the most dangerous parts of the storm,” he said. We really want people to stay inside.”
