What's next for COVID-19 apps? Governance and oversight

Science   Article

Studies conducted in April and May 2020 showed that in countries like the United States, Switzerland, and Italy, between 55 and 70% of adults in all age groups were willing to download a contact tracing app (5).

Yet these figures do not match the current DCT apps uptake. Even in countries with robust privacy safeguards in place, downloads of DCT apps have been below expectations. At the time of writing, the Australian DCT app has been downloaded by 6.5 million (26% of the population), the Italian one by 8 million (13.4%), and the newly released French one by 1.5 million (2.3%). Ireland has about 1.3 million active app users (24%), Switzerland 1.8 million (21.5%), and Germany 16 million (19.3%).

CDC guidelines for voting safely amid the Covid-10 pandemic

Early voting has already generated long, long lines in many states, and with the November election just 11 days away, many states and cities have imposed safety measures to protect voters and poll workers from exposure to the coronavirus.

But polling places still have the potential to become “mass gathering events,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned in an advisory released on Friday, adding that measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 could be improved.

Poll: Number of Americans willing to get COVID-19 vaccine falls to new low amid fears Trump is putting politics before safety

https://news.yahoo.com/poll-number-of-americans-willing-to-get-a-vaccination-falls-as-fears-mount-that-trump-is-putting-politics-before-safety-203727770.html

In early May, most Americans (55 percent) said they would get vaccinated for COVID-19 if and when a vaccine becomes available.

Now, four months later, less than a third of Americans (32 percent) say they plan to get vaccinated, according to the latest Yahoo News/YouGov poll — a stunning 23-point decline that reflects rising concern about the politicization of the vaccine process and underscores how challenging it will be to stop the pandemic through vaccination alone.

A YEAR AGO, while on a tourist visit to Latvia, Sharon Bard was awoken at 4 am by a buzzing alert from her phone. It was an email from a friend who’d been checking on her home in Santa Rosa, California. Given the alarming news, the email's phrasing was rather gentle: A fire had broken out in the area, officials had ordered evacuations, and Bard’s country house at the end of a road might be affected.

Hurricane Maria left a ruined island and 16 Puerto Rico residents dead. But public health experts worry that figure could climb higher in the coming weeks, as many on the island fail to get medicines or treatment they need for chronic diseases. Roads are blocked, supplies are stuck at the ports, and only 11 of Puerto Rico’s 69 hospitals are open.

theatlantic.com - March 15th 2017 - Kaveh Waddell

On a quiet afternoon, two medium-sized nuclear blasts level portions of Manhattan.

If this were a movie, hordes of panicked New Yorkers would pour out into the streets, running around and calling out for their loved ones. But reality doesn’t usually line up with Hollywood’s vision of a disaster scene, says William Kennedy, a professor in the Center for Social Complexity at George Mason University.

One by one, ordinary residents confronted the federal regulators, telling them during a three-hour meeting Tuesday night that the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station here was not safe and should be shut down.

Their chief piece of evidence? An internal email written Dec. 6 by the leader of a federal inspection team and sent accidentally — thanks to autofill in the “to” line — to Diane Turco, a citizen activist opposed to the plant.
