RAC Workgroup Efforts Focused on Vaccines and Vaccination

The Resilient American Communities (RAC) Vaccines and Vaccination Group is examining and acting on the issues surrounding vaccines development, distribution, vaccination logistics and execution, as well as vaccination strategy, safety, efficacy, trust, and hesitancy. Special attention is currently focused on COVID-19 vaccines and vaccination.

Updated COVID-19 vaccines are already showing up on some pharmacy and health provider shelves. But a key program that paid for the vaccines when people lacked coverage is out of money. So those who are under-insured or uninsured could pay up to $200 for the booster.

The good news is, the risk of developing Long COVID has dropped significantly since the start of the pandemic—and, according to a new study, we have COVID-19 vaccines to thank for much of this decline. The bad news is, the risk of developing this post-acute infection syndrome remains substantial.

A new study in the Journal of Public Health suggests that it is more effective to emphasize the harms that come from not getting vaccinated rather than emphasizing the benefits of vaccination at the individual or community level.

UK studies highlight prevalence, severity, and impact of long-COVID symptoms Two new studies conducted in the United Kingdom describe the prevalence, severity, and impact of long COVID. One of the studies found fatigue, tiredness, and shortness of breath were the most common persistent symptoms among UK healthcare workers (HCWs) and had a significant impact on their work and life. The other suggested that pain is the most prevalent and severe symptom among long-COVID patients and that demographic factors such as age and ethnicity play a role in symptom severity. CIDRAP
