Mpox in Africa: WHO approves first mpox test for quick diagnosis Lack of testing and delays in getting the results have made curbing the virus's spread harder. BBC News

The World Health Organization (WHO) has approved the first diagnostic test for mpox where the results can be immediately known, saying it could prove pivotal in helping to stop the rising global cases of the deadly virus.

The new PCR test enables the detection of the mpox DNA taken from skin lesion swabs.

Marburg virus outbreak in Rwanda draws concern over possibility of international spread A large outbreak of Marburg virus in Rwanda is drawing international concern about the possibility of spread beyond the country’s borders. Helen Branswell STAT

The number of cases detected so far, 27, already makes the outbreak one of the biggest involving Marburg on record. Nine of those individuals have died. There are currently no licensed vaccines to combat the disease.

WHO recommends maternal shot and antibody therapy to prevent RSV in infants The recommendations, to administer both the shot and the antibody or either, come after the WHO's strategic advisory group on immunization met last week. For countries that decide to use a maternal vaccine, WHO said it recommends a single shot in the third trimester of pregnancy. Drugmaker Pfizer's shot is approved in the United States for use in women during the middle of the third trimester of pregnancy to protect their babies. Yahoo News

Globally, during the 28-day period (22 July to 18 August 2024), the number of new cases and deaths increased by 23% and 44% compared to the previous 28-day period (24 June to 18 August 2024), with 238 000 new cases reported across 91 (39%) countries and about 4400 new fatalities reported across 35 (15%) countries, respectively. As of 22 July to 18 August 2024, over 776 million confirmed cases and more than seven million deaths have been reported globally since the beginning of pandemic.
