Governor of New York Launches Massive Training Program for Citizen Preparedness

On Feb. 1 New York’s Governor Cuomo will launch the Citizen Preparedness Corps Training Program.

According to an article from longisland.com, the program is designed to give 100,000 New Yorkers the training they need to be better prepared for emergencies and disasters. Not only will this training enable them to help themselves in a crisis, it will also teach them how to help their families and neighbors.

Severe weather events are becoming more frequent and extreme and to make sure that our communities are safe, we need more New Yorkers than ever to be prepared and trained to respond,” said Cuomo in the article.

The Citizen Preparedness Corps Training Program will train 100,000 citizens to help provide crucial and critical assistance in their own homes or in their own communities whenever disaster strikes,” said Cuomo.

The training program will be carried out by the New York National Guard and advisors from the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services’ Office of Emergency Management and Office of Fire Prevention and Control.

The program will focus largely on providing participants with advice about how to properly prepare for disasters. It will also show them how to register for the state emergency alert system NY-Alert and will provide them with information about the organizations that can offer help in emergencies.

In keeping with the program’s focus, every trainee will be given a Citizen Preparedness Corps Response Starter Kit (one kit per family), which includes the basic items people may need during a disaster.

Each kit includes:

  • Plastic drop cloth

  • Light stick

  • (2) D Batteries

  • First Aid Kit

  • Face mask

  • Safety goggles

  • AM/FM pocket radio with batteries

  • (6) packs of drinking water

  • (6) food bars

  • Regular flashlight

  • Emergency blanket

  • Duct tape

  • Work gloves

  • Water bottle

The training will begin on Feb. 1 in Richmond County and Suffolk County, New York. If you would like to register, visit http://www.nyprepare.gov/aware-prepare/nysprepare/
